A hospice programs provides end-of-life care, also called palliative care. This type of care is available for patients in the final stages of disease--the last days, weeks, or months of life. Hospice care can be provided in the patient’s or family caregiver’s home, in hospitals with special hospice units, or in hospice programs or homes. Patients and family choosing hospice care must accept that the illness is terminal and that death is inevitable.
