Cervical cancer can be detected through one of the best screening methods of any available for cancer detection -- a Pap smear. Usually performed during an annual gynecologic examination, a Pap smear is a cancer screening test used to detect changes in the cervix. All women who are sexually active should have this test performed regularly.
Cervical cancer generally occurs in a younger age group than uterine cancer. Often, women with cervical cancer don’t have symptoms, except in advanced stages. Warning signs include vaginal bleeding or a bloodstained discharge at unexpected times -- such as between periods, after sexual intercourse or after menopause.
