Treatment options for breast cancer will vary to some degree with each patient's case. Age, overall health, and the stage (type and level of growth) of cancer are all factors that physicians will consider when recommending a treatment plan. Often, the treatment plan may include several types of treatment, such as surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Patients should work with their physician or team of physicians to learn about and make decisions for their treatment. You may also see another physician for a second opinion. Many patients often conduct their own research on treatment options and discuss their findings with their physicians. Organizations such as the National Cancer Society are a good starting point for research.
Possible treatment options include surgery (including mastectomy), radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and biological therapy (immunotherapy)
Clinical trials also provide new options for treatment. Your healthcare professional can provide you with information about clinical trials.
