Fractures

Related Subjects

Sometimes when an outside force is applied to a bone, it causes the bone to break. Another word for this break is a fracture.

Fractures can occur in different forms. Bones may crack, split, or shatter. The bone may break in such a way that bone fragments stick out through the skin or a wound penetrates down to the broken bone. This type of fracture is particularly serious because the broken skin can result in an infection at the wound and the bone.

Fractures are usually quite painful. You should contact your physician and receive emergency care immediately. The physician will probably prescribe X-rays to determine the exact location and type of the fracture.
