Anorexia nervosa is one of several eating disorders. People with anorexia nervosa restrict the amount of food they eat so that their weight drops 15% or more below the expected for their height. People with anorexia nervosa may have an intense fear of gaining weight and think they are fat--even when they are not.
Anorexia nervosa often begins during a person's teenage years. If untreated, it can become a lifelong illness. It can also affect the joints, the heart, the female reproductive system, and other areas of the body.
