Bursae are small sacs of fluid that help protect joints such as shoulders or knees. Bursitis is a condition that occurs when these sacs become irritated and swollen (inflamed).
Inflammation can be caused by a disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or by activities that lead to overuse of the joint, such as sports or occupational activities.
