Asthma is a disease that inflames or swells the airways of the lungs, making breathing difficult.
For a person with asthma, the lung's airways become sensitive to certain "triggers," such as smoke, pollen, or viruses. The body reacts by causing wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, or tightness of the chest. When these symptoms happen suddenly and strongly, it's called an asthma attack.
Attacks may come and go, but the asthma is always there. Asthma can be controlled with proper, long-term treatment such as medicine and learning to avoid triggers, but it cannot be cured.
