Angioplasty

Related Subjects

Coronary balloon angioplasty is a surgical treatment used to open blocked arteries that prevent blood flowing to the heart. Blocked arteries can cause a heart attack or death.

The surgeon creates space in the blocked artery by inserting and inflating a tiny balloon. The inflated balloon presses the plaque (build-up that blocks the arteries) against the walls of the artery. When the balloon is deflated and removed, the plaque remains pressed against the wall, making space for blood to flow through.
