Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older people. Dementia is a medical condition that disrupts the way the brain works. People with Alzheimer's can experience changes to the brain that affects thought, memory, and language.
Alzheimer's begins slowly; the first symptom may be mild forgetfulness about recent events or names of familiar people and things. Often, these symptoms are thought of as a typical sign of aging and are not associated with Alzheimer's. But as the disease continues, patients may forget how to do simple tasks such as brushing their teeth. They may have trouble thinking clearly, remembering, or understanding. When these symptoms threaten the person's ability to stay safe and well, the patient may require total care.
